Creating Stooped
Created for the Course New Media Research Studio
Stooping is the act of taking and leaving items, such as clothing or furniture, on stoops. It's a prolific activity around New York City; My aunt would tell us stories about the many ways she avoided paying for furniture as a young adult. Nowadays, stooping is aided by the online world.
However, many Stoopers find the social media accounts that post about available items difficult to navigate. They crowdsource from all of New York City, so it's impossible to know where in a post history an object you can actually get is. Many posts only include addresses, so you'll have to search to find out the neighborhood if you're unfamiliar with a street name. And, even if you can get it, there are no updates to tell you if someone's already grabbed it.
In the course New Media Research Studio, we were asked to find a problem in the world, conduct user research, wireframe, and then prototype a phone application to solve their problems. My application Stooped solved for these problems by allowing users to provide mapping data and consistent updates to the gems they find around the city.

"My favorite Stooped item is a purple, velvet long-sleeved tunic for more sentimental purposes. There was a giant pile of things on the sidewalk, and it was clear someone had passed away and their things were just thrown out. My roommate and I collected a yearbook, family photos, and a third grade journal. Stooping is a legacy activity, and it was important to honor that legacy. The story of the tunic has never been neglected when people compliment it."
